Puleo's Auto Clinic

Some vehicle owners may have read through their service manual to try to find out how often you should change your brakes. The fact is, there is not a set time or mileage interval for brake service. So how often should you change your brakes? To put it simply, head to your auto shop for brake repair any time you feel you are starting to notice stopping problems. Make sure you are driving as safely as possible with brakes in good condition!

Hopefully, most drivers know their vehicles well enough so that when brakes begin to fail and lose their effectiveness, they understand that neglecting just one of the various components that make up the braking system (rotors, pads, calipers, discs, hoses, and a drum) can cause damage to any or all of them. The three most common components that may need to be replaced include:

  • Brake Pads – A grinding or squealing sound when the brakes are engaged may be the sound of metal on metal indicating that the brake pads have worn down and need to be replaced. Otherwise, damage can occur to the calipers and/or rotors.
  • Calipers – Calipers squeeze the brake pads against the rotors, causing your vehicle to come to a stop. Have them inspected frequently. If calipers need to be replaced, the cost of brake repair will be more costly than replacing pads or rotors.
  • Rotors – The brake pads are pushed by the calipers against the wall of the rotor, creating the friction that brings your vehicle to a stop. If they haven’t worn too thin, they may only need to be resurfaced instead of replaced.

Remember: Don’t put off a needed brake repair service. Spending a few dollars earlier rather than later on simple brake repair is worth the cost knowing you are driving as safely as possible!
