Puleo's Auto Clinic

Even though most vehicle owners know that brake repair is one of the most common maintenance issues with vehicles, it can still cause feelings of anxiety because of the cost and time involved! However, when compared to the safety of your vehicle, brake replacement is priceless! The last thing anyone wants is to put themselves and others in a dangerous situation because of poor brakes.

However, just how often should you get your brakes replaced, you ask? Although there isn’t a set time or mileage schedule for brake replacement, there are several issues to consider when thinking about the condition of your brakes:

  • What is the condition of the braking components (rotors, pads, and calipers),
  • What kind of roads to you consistently drive on?
  • How do you stop--hard sudden stops or gentle coasting?
  • Do you know the difference between a manual or automatic transmission when it comes to the wear and tear on your brakes?

But just what does a brake replacement consist of? It usually means replacing the rotors and brakes pads, the parts most associated with slowing and stopping your vehicle. However, it could also mean replacing the brake caliper if it is no longer able to do its job of slowing the rotors. The brake fluid should also be replaced on a regular basis. The brake lines should be checked for clogs, rust, or small holes and the anti-lock brakes system (ABS) should be checked to make sure your car’s brakes don’t lock up.

Tips to Remember:  These tips will help increase the lifespan of your brakes:

  • Steady driving.
  • Start to slow down by letting up on the accelerator.
  • Avoid sudden hard stops.
  • Downshift when going downhill instead of riding the brake all the way down.
  • Frequent brake inspections keep you aware of the condition of your brake components.
