Puleo's Auto Clinic

This is a question that many drivers ask because they think their car is running just fine—getting them from Point A to Point B. However, many auto mechanics recommend servicing a car every twelve months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. However, did you know that in 2021, the average number of miles driven per year in the U.S. was a little over 14,000 miles? If you know you drive more than the average number of miles per year, you may want to have your car inspected at least every six months to make sure it stays in tip-top condition.

So even though we have discussed above how often should you get your car serviced, there are a few other factors to consider:

  • The actual amount of miles you drive in a year;
  • How well you keep up-to-date with the recommended maintenance; and
  • The road conditions on which you travel consistently.

Newer cars are designed with built-in computers that trigger a warning light on the instrument panel at certain service intervals. Even with these modern sensors, it is still important to follow the manufacturer’s service guidelines listed in your owner’s manual. Or your car repair technician can keep you informed as to what type of service is needed for your vehicle when it should be done, and how much it will cost.

Unfortunately, some drivers think they are saving money by skipping basic car service but in reality, they may end up spending more on an unexpected car repair than the cost of the service itself. Neglecting regular car service could cause the following problems:

  • Decreased fuel economy so you are filling up the tank more often than usual.
  • Your vehicle loses power by accelerating, going up a hill, or trying to overtake a slower vehicle.
  • Poor air quality inside your vehicle.
  • Your engine starts to make odd noises due to the build-up of oil sludge.

Remember: During a basic car service, small problems can be detected early and taken care of, lowering the chance of an unexpected roadside breakdown and costly car repair.
